Sergeant Major of the Army Recruiting Team (SMART) Program

As an integral team effort in helping meet the Army's recruiting mission, the Sergeant Major of the Army organized the Sergeant Major of the Army Recruiting Team (SMART). This program encourages Soldiers to provide referrals interested in the Army and Army Reserve.

The United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) developed this referral system for all Soldiers (Regular Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard) on all Army installations and in all Reserve units in addition to Future Soldiers (Regular Army, Army Reserve) in the Future Soldier Training Program. Soldiers and Future Soldiers have the ability to provide referrals interested in the opportunities of the Army and Army Reserve. Referring Soldiers or Future Soldiers must either submit their referral(s) via this site or through the USAREC 1-800 line (1-800-223-3735 extension 6-0473) dedicated to this program.

Referral Bonus Program

Effective 13 November 2006, Regular Army and Army Reserve Future Soldier Training Program (FSTP) members are eligible to provide referrals under this program and receive the $2,000 Referral Bonus on persons that have not conducted an appointment with a recruiter. The Future Soldier will not receive the bonus payment until he or she accesses onto active duty and then will receive a split payment of $1,000 when the person they referred starts basic training and the remaining $1,000 when the person they referred completes Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Future Soldiers must create a user account using their AKO user name (i.e. firstname.lastname) and password and complete all Profile information on this website in order to be eligible for the referral bonus. Please click on the Future Soldier Referral Instructions located on the left of this page for creating a user account on the SMART website. All Future Soldiers must have established an AKO email account and are required to establish a user account prior to making a referral.

Future Soldiers must provide all information on the website in order to qualify for the Referral Bonus in accordance with the referral instruction. All information provided by the referring Future Soldier will be authenticated by the HQ USAREC program manager to determine their eligibility. Upon receiving the referral at HQ USAREC, the referral information will be submitted for contact and pre-qualification screening. Once contact and pre-qualification screening is completed, the referral information will be sent to the nearest Recruiting Station. The Recruiting Station will contact the referral and set up an appointment to discuss the enlistment opportunities and continue processing the individual for enlistment into the Army or Army Reserve.

The Future Soldier can check the referral's current status by logging onto their ARS-SMART account and selecting referral summary. If the referral becomes unqualified, does not enlist and ship to IET, or fails to complete IET the Future Soldier will also receive a letter by mail. Due to privacy requirements the exact reasons for disqualification or failure to complete training will not be disclosed.
